in early 2013, social media activist "Annabell Betsy Greens" Revealed that 80-95 people will communicate with in-person social interaction, while 17% of those 80% people will communicate via cyber social interaction, every 2 minutes a person will realistically interact socially with a person, whilst every 4 seconds people will communicate with cyber social interaction.
Talking about the social comparison method, Ms Greens told CNBC she would not be telling people how to spend their time, "I would just point out that social media is here to stay and it is all a great way to build social capital if used the right way."
Responding to a study that revealed that the way we live and the way we work are changing, Ms Greens told CNBC it was not because society was not seeing the benefits of working on social media, "This is about social media being played out in ways that we don't fully understand. Our work is changing every 2 seconds and we are changing on social media every 4 seconds, people have completely lost touch with reality."
"People are obsessed with being social, it is sad when people say that they are more productive working in the office or while working out or with their family but instead we should be working more efficiently in the real world," Ms Greens added.
"Social media is a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to build an online presence. You can use social media to build a lot of connections, it really is about communication. With social media you can become the creator of your own social media world, and it can be a safe space for you to ask questions that are impossible to ask in the real world. Social media is about positive communication, and to some degree you are building your own social network. You can have the relationships you are looking for."
"To be honest, people are obsessed with making friends online. This is going to continue because people want to be social and they want the interaction. I feel like people who are less social have not noticed the change that is going on because they are just focused on their social life."
Even though she believes we are living in an era of unprecedented hyper-social interaction, Ms Greens also believes social media has changed the way we interact with each other, "I think that we are building an interactive social media world where we can start to build social bonds, but we are so used to the idea of messaging someone on social media that this sort of interactivity is something we are lacking. Sometimes we are too engaged in social media and this is building our social networks for us."
But more importantly, the conversation has moved away from how social media has changed our relationships and conversations in the social world, to asking if social media can change the real world as well.
In November, journalist Bryan Rego explored this issue in an article published by the Boston Globe. The article explains how despite social media being portrayed by many as a tool for social progress and a new platform for communication, the media has always changed to connect people and social trends. Social media could change how we interact with each other, and also change the way the real world works. Social media is a tool to connect and talk to each other, but social media does not build the society, social media does not transform the world, and social media is not really a tool to help people interact with each other.
Ms Greens explained, "These types of new media might transform society in the future but how can we know, if we have not built this relationship? I feel like people have already formed strong connections and relationships with each other on social media, but if we just rely on social media for our communication we will not know the real effects. If we are not talking and interacting in real life, how can we get to know who we are talking to? Can we really make it to know them if we are never in real life? Real life interactions give us social cues. People are interacting on social media now because they can rely on social media to connect."
As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and advanced, our tools to interact are also becoming more complex. Social media and social media platforms are also moving into new way of communicating with people
